Etsy – provides SOME of the tools you need to run your business, but the biggest benefit (in my opinion) is they promote your products for you in there marketplace. It’s great for finding customers.
Shopify – is an epic website builder that provides all of the tools you need to run and manage your business. It’s great for building a brand and owning the customer journey.
The biggest downside of using Etsy is that they control your destiny and brand. Meaning if they go out of business, you likely will, too, especially if your main source of customers is from Etsy discovery. Letting a third-party control your entire brand/business is risky. But it has some obvious benefits when you’re starting from zero.
The biggest downside of using Shopify is that they don’t provide a way for you to get customers. That will be your job. Whether it’s email marketing, social media, or word of mouth, it’s your job to get visitors to your sites.
Using Shopify and Etsy Together? Why Both?
When you start to grow your business and think about longevity, it makes a lot of sense to use Shopify and Etsy together, especially if you got started on Etsy and get a lot of traffic from them.
Why? Two reasons…
Benefit #1 of using both: Diversify
In any scenario, it’s never a good idea to put all of your eggs in one basket. It’s good to diversify. Because when you build a business on top of a third-party tool like Amazon, Etsy, or Shopify, you’re just one feature, fee, or rule change away from dead.

How to Import Etsy to Shopify?
Shopify allows you to import your products, customer reviews, and order data from Etsy Shop. To do this, there are three necessary steps:
Etsy will provide you with CSV (comma separated values) files of all your data. This spreadsheet file includes everything you need to list and import on your Shopify account.
Exporting product data from Etsy
- In your Etsy Dashboard, go to Settings, go to Options then click Download Data.
- Then under Currently for Sale Listings, click Download CSV file. A CSV file containing your product data will be automatically saved to your computer.
Export your customer and order data and items from Etsy
- In your Etsy dashboard, go to Settings, click Options, then click Download Data.
- Under Orders, select Orders as the CSV file type to download.
- You may choose either Month and/or Year, depends on which data you want to download. If you have order data that spans multiple years, then download the files for each Year and import them into Shopify.
- Click Download CSV files. Then it will automatically be saved to your computer.
Import your store data into Shopify
Once you have exported your data into the CSV file from Etsy, it’s time to import your files into Shopify.
Import CSV Into Shopify Steps:
- From your Shopify Dashboard, click Products > Import store (located beneath the products heading).
- On the Import your data into the Shopify page, select Etsy from the drop-down menu.
- In the Upload Files section, click Add file and select the exported CSV files.
- The Import Store App will let you add multiple CSV files at the same time. However, when importing orders, you need to add the exported files for both orders and order items for the data to import correctly.
- A preview of the first data will show – this will let you check if the data or the first product looks okay, then click START IMPORT.
- The products or data will start importing, but the length of time will depend on the number of products you imported. Once the Import is done, all products from the Etsy account will be now added to your Shopify site. You can check into each data and make necessary changes within the Products menu on your Shopify Dashboard.
Review and update your imported data
Once you successfully uploaded your product, customer reviews, and order data, it is now available in your Shopify admin. However, there could be issues that might occur as if some of your products or customers didn’t import correctly. You can add them anyway, manually, or learn more about solutions to common product CSV import problems.
Etsy Shopify Inventory Management Tips
Moving forward, if you use both Shopify and Etsy along with an integration app like Shopfunnel, make sure that you are keeping the following things in mind.
