Switching from Etsy to Shopify

So you’re considering switching from Etsy to Shopify? If so, you’ve come to the right place! In this article, we’ll tell you everything you need to know about this migration. Let’s dive in!

Etsy to Shopify

Why should you switch?

Switching from Etsy to Shopify gives you the freedom and flexibility to run a business that allows you to scale and automate a lot of the commerce processes, allowing makers to focus on what they do best.

It also allows you to control the design and function of your website and target new audiences outside of Etsy’s community and own them. Shopify integrates with different sales channels like Amazon and Houzz to help you reach niche audiences and sync sales.

Pros of switching:

  • You have more control over your brand, customers, and business.
  • The leading Etsy platform is restricted to selling only arts, crafts, handmade products, and vintage goods. This limits some buyers’ potential and merchants to sell unlimited types of products.
  • As a ready platform, you don’t have any creative powers to customize your store and implement unique designs.
  • With all the vendors selling different products on the same platform to the same audiences, Etsy’s competition could still be very stiff.
  • Limited integrations and apps for adding functionalities, unlike Shopify, it allows you to integrate other social commerce like Facebook Shop, Google Shopping, Buyable Pins, and Facebook Messenger.
  • Shopify allows Global shipping with USPS, UPS, and DHL Express.

Cons of switching:

  • You need to do your marketing on Shopify!
  • Shopify is a lot more expensive than Etsy, although not more costly than other online store builders like BigCommerce.
  • There will be additional transaction fees that are being charged for using external gateways other than Shopify Payments.
  • It does not have a free plan, but a 14-day free trial only.
  • It requires an upgrade or use of paid-for apps to be able to access certain features like reports.
  • Switching Shopify means you have to get you to build your traffic to your store.

How to switch:

Instead of starting from scratch, and recreating your product pages on a new platform, you can import much of your work into Shopify. The following instructions are used to import easily, but there are several Shopify Apps in the store for Etsy import/integration, or you can watch this video for instructions: How To Move Your Etsy Shop To Shopify Tutorial | Etsy vs. Shopify 2020

But wait, who says you can’t use both?

Etsy merge to Shopify

Shopify and Etsy represent two different ways of selling or methods. In some cases, though, you can use both simultaneously and integrate them. Etsy will give you access to a broad audience that has already been grown. The downside is that Etsy can be overcrowded. It is advisable to start on Etsy, build your brand, and then create a standalone eCommerce store on Shopify when you already have your brand audience. You can still maintain your Etsy shop, though, but expand your brand with your Shopify store.

There are several apps on the Shopify app store for importing your Etsy listing to Shopify, syncing the two platforms, and generally integrating several aspects of the eCommerce powerhouses.

Shopify is a heavyweight eCommerce platform, while Etsy is tailored towards artists and creators.

If you decided to sell on Etsy, you will get more exposure than you would on your online store, but you won’t have the unique eCommerce store that you can customize. With Shopify, you are in total control, although you will have to work to build your audience and traffic to your web store.

Both have their unique advantages and disadvantages. But, the right decision to switch Etsy to Shopify is entirely up to you.
